The Art of Violin Making

Luthiery is the art of making stringed musical instruments, such as violins, cellos, double basses and other similar instruments, with great attention to the quality of the sound and the perfection of the construction techniques. The figure of luthier is a combination of craftsman, artist and scientist, because not only he must he be skilled in working with wood and other materials, but he must also have a thorough knowledge of the physics of sound and the mechanics of musical instruments.
The choice of materials must be of the highest quality to obtain a pure and rich sound. Wood, in particular, is fundamental!
Varnishing is another fundamental aspect, since it not only gives the instrument an aesthetic appearance, but also it helps to modulate the sound.
Finally, the adjustment of the instrument (such as fitting the strings and tuning the bridge and neck) requires an expert ear, capable of perceiving subtle differences in the sound.
The work is mainly done by hand, using traditional tools such as chisels, rasps and planers.
Luthiery is not only a craft, but an art that combines tradition, manual skills and science.

With us you will have the opportunity to discover this wonderful craft in a real luthier’s workshop!!
