The Sicilian ``Pupi``

Pupi are armed marionettes of epic, popular theatre, which is thought to have originated in Spain, and performed in Naples and Rome, but especially from the mid 1800s in Sicily where it was most popular. In the tradition of the Pupi, the topics were of high ideals, morality and based around the concept of the “paladin heart”. Especially in Sicily this theatre of civilisation, politics and religion captured the imagination of the island, and earned its permanent place in popular culture.
